Don’t Get on the Wrong Bus!

A €28 Lesson in Madrid — Why You Should Think Twice Before Buying a Sightseeing Ticket in Advance

#JoeKnows | Travel Tips from Madrid

Madrid is a magnificent city, and one of the easiest ways to explore it is aboard a hop-on, hop-off sightseeing bus.

Sounds simple, right? Not necessarily!

Denise and I decided to spend the day sightseeing. Before leaving our hotel, the Aloft Madrid Gran Vía, we purchased senior tickets for €28 each through the hotel.

We had our tickets, QR codes, and instructions. What could possibly go wrong?

Then we stepped outside.

There were sightseeing buses everywhere! Big Bus, Madrid City Tour, and regular city buses, all operating along busy streets, with different routes, stops, and ticketing arrangements.

We had purchased tickets for Madrid City Tour, operated by Julià Travel / Gray Line. Our tickets were perfectly valid, but that didn’t mean we could board whichever sightseeing bus arrived first.

And there’s the problem.

Here’s What I Would Do Differently

Don’t automatically buy your sightseeing ticket in advance at the hotel.

Instead, walk outside, find a sightseeing operator serving the areas you want to explore, and ask a few simple questions.

Does it cover historic Madrid? Modern Madrid? Where does it stop? How long is the complete circuit?

Once you’ve found the tour that suits you, confirm the fare and whether tickets can be purchased directly from the driver or operator.

Find the right tour first. Buy the ticket second.

That way, you’re not standing on a crowded sidewalk holding a prepaid ticket while watching other sightseeing buses come and go.

My Best Tip: Buy Onboard and Avoid the Wait!

Rather than committing to one company in advance, consider boarding the first suitable sightseeing bus that arrives and purchasing your ticket directly, if onboard sales are available.

Why wait 30 or 40 minutes for a particular operator when another company may already be there, ready to take you sightseeing?

Different operators have different schedules and frequencies. By purchasing when you’re ready to ride, you may avoid wasting valuable vacation time waiting for a specific service.

Just confirm that the route covers the attractions you want to see, that tickets are available onboard, and that the fare meets your expectations.

The goal is to see Madrid, not spend your afternoon waiting for the company whose ticket you bought at breakfast!

Why Make Sightseeing So Complicated?

After decades in the travel industry, I still find myself asking why we make simple travel experiences unnecessarily difficult.

Tourists don’t care which company owns which vehicle. They want to see the Royal Palace, Gran Vía, historic neighborhoods, beautiful architecture, and everything else Madrid has to offer.

They shouldn’t need to become transportation detectives before they can enjoy the city.

Better signage, clearer boarding instructions, and more straightforward information from hotels would make an enormous difference.

My €28 Travel Lesson

Buying in advance can be convenient, particularly when reservations are required or advance discounts are offered. But when several competing sightseeing operators serve the same destination, a little flexibility may be worth more.

Our €28 tickets were valid. The frustration was figuring out exactly where and how to use them.

My advice? Don’t buy first and search later. Find the sightseeing experience you want, then purchase your ticket. And if you can buy onboard, why wait for a particular company’s next departure?

Because the best part of visiting Madrid should be discovering the city, not trying to figure out which company you’ve already paid.

Don’t get on the wrong bus. Better yet, don’t buy a ticket for the wrong one!

Parece sencillo, ¿verdad? ¡Pues no necesariamente!
